Why is my dishwasher not draining in Huntersville NC?
A dishwasher that won't drain almost always has one of four causes — and three of them you can check yourself before calling anyone:
- Clogged filter — the most common cause by far. Most modern dishwashers have a cylindrical filter at the bottom of the tub that collects food debris. When it's clogged, water has nowhere to go and sits at the bottom after the cycle ends.
- Blocked drain hose — the rubber hose that runs from the dishwasher to the sink drain or garbage disposal can develop a kink or accumulate grease buildup that restricts flow.
- Failed drain pump — the pump that forces water out of the tub has seized or burned out. This is the repair that requires a technician.
- Garbage disposal connection — if your dishwasher drains into a garbage disposal and the disposal is new or was recently replaced, the knockout plug inside the disposal inlet may not have been removed. This completely blocks drainage and is a 2-minute fix.
The filter and disposal connection are free to check and fix yourself. The drain hose takes about 10 minutes. If all three check out and the dishwasher still won't drain, the pump needs to be diagnosed by a technician.
How do I know if it's the filter or the drain pump?
This is the question we get most often on dishwasher service calls in Huntersville, and the answer is straightforward once you know what to look for.
It's almost certainly the filter if:
- Water drains slowly but does eventually clear — even partially
- You haven't cleaned the filter in 6 months or more
- There's visible food debris or grease buildup at the bottom of the tub
- The dishwasher is otherwise working normally — cycles complete, dishes are clean
It's likely the drain pump if:
- Water sits completely still at the bottom — not draining at all, not even slowly
- You hear a humming sound during the drain cycle but no water moves
- You've already cleaned the filter and checked the hose and it still won't drain
- The dishwasher is showing an error code related to draining (OE on LG, F8E4 on Whirlpool, i30 on Bosch)
A humming drain pump that moves no water is a pump that has seized — the motor is running but the impeller is stuck. That's a parts-and-labor repair, not a filter cleaning.
How do I clean my dishwasher filter?
Cleaning the filter takes about 5 minutes and fixes most dishwasher-not-draining calls that we would otherwise dispatch a technician to. Here's the correct procedure for most brands:
- Remove the bottom rack completely
- Locate the filter assembly at the bottom of the tub — it's usually a cylindrical mesh filter surrounded by a flat filter plate. On Samsung and LG it's in the center rear; on Whirlpool and KitchenAid it's slightly forward of center; on Bosch it's also center bottom.
- Twist the cylindrical filter counterclockwise and lift it straight out
- Lift the flat filter plate out underneath it
- Rinse both pieces under running water. Use a soft brush — an old toothbrush works perfectly — to scrub the mesh. Do not use abrasive pads.
- Check the filter housing in the tub for debris and clear it out
- Reinstall the flat plate first, then the cylindrical filter. Twist clockwise until it locks.
- Run a short cycle and check whether the water drains
For most Huntersville households, monthly filter cleaning prevents almost all dishwasher drainage calls. Hard water accelerates buildup — if your water leaves deposits on glassware, clean the filter every 3 to 4 weeks.
Dishwasher drain error codes for each brand
If your dishwasher is showing an error code and not draining, here's what the code means by brand:
Samsung: OC or OE indicates water overflow or drainage failure. Usually filter or drain pump.
LG: OE is the drain error. Start with the filter — LG's OE code is triggered frequently by clogged filters before the pump actually fails.
Whirlpool and KitchenAid: F8E4 or F8 E4 is the drain pump error. Also check F9E1 which indicates a drain hose issue.
Bosch: E24 is the most common drain error — blocked filter or kinked drain hose. E25 points more specifically to the drain pump or filter assembly. i30 indicates water in the base pan, which can trigger the anti-flood mechanism and prevent draining.
GE: No standard drain error code on most models, but a continuous beeping after the cycle combined with standing water points to the drain pump or filter.
Maytag: F8E4 same as Whirlpool (same platform). Check filter first.
